August 21, 1888 marked an important day in the history of mechanical calculation. On that date, William Seward Burroughs received U.S. Patent No. 388,116 for a “Calculating-Machine,” an invention that helped transform the way businesses performed arithmetic and recorded financial information.

Burroughs’s invention used a system of keys, registers, and mechanical connections to assist with arithmetic. Importantly, Patent No. 388,116 described a machine capable of not only displaying the sum of a series of numbers, but also permanently recording the final result—a significant feature for businesses dependent on accurate financial records. For clerks and bookkeepers in the late nineteenth century, arithmetic was an essential but time-consuming part of daily work. Burroughs recognized the need for a more reliable and practical way to perform calculations. His solution was part of a broader effort to mechanize the routine tasks of business. Within a year of receiving his patents, Burroughs had produced 50 machines. The earliest versions were not without challenges, but continued improvements helped establish Burroughs as an important pioneer in the calculating-machine industry.

Patent No. 388,116 was not the only patent Burroughs received on August 21, 1888. He was granted four U.S. patents—Nos. 388,116, 388,117, 388,118 and 388,119—all relating to calculating machines. These patents reflected different aspects and improvements of his mechanical calculating technology.

One of the concepts behind these inventions was the combination of mechanical calculation and recordkeeping. Rather than relying entirely on handwritten calculations, Burroughs envisioned machines that could help users calculate numbers, display results, and, in certain designs, create a printed record. That combination would prove increasingly valuable as businesses grew and demanded greater speed and accuracy in their accounting operations.

Burroughs’s calculating machine represents more than an interesting piece of nineteenth-century machinery. It illustrates a fundamental purpose of the patent system: protecting and disclosing technological innovation.
