As Hurricane Milton approaches the west coast of Florida with an expected landfall early tomorrow morning, those who have not already evacuated to a safe location, continue to scramble in a last-minute effort to protect themselves and their property from potential destruction.  On the eve of Milton, and in the wake of Hurricane Helene, wouldn’t it be nice if we could — somehow, someway — stop these storms from forming or destroy the storms as they are forming?

Well, Bruce Morton, a retired aerospace engineer and rocket scientist, may have the answer.  He has been awarded several U.S. patents from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) for preventing the formation of hurricanes, the most recent of which (U.S. Patent No. 12,108,709) just issued yesterday on October 8, 2024.

The patent is titled “Technology and Technique to Prevent, Diminish or Interfere with the Formation of Sea and Land-Based Storms Such As Hurricanes and Tornados on Earth” and introduces a method of focusing energy, for example, in the form of microwave energy, solar energy or laser energy,  onto segments of a rotating tropical depression.  This energy interrupts and destabilizes the tropical depression ultimately preventing the tropical depression from forming into a tropical storm or hurricane.

In some cases, the energy is beamed from above using solar-powered satellites, as shown below.
